An aperture pour (or pot melt, pot drop, or shelf melt) is a method to create an organic, swirly, interesting mixture of glasses using a kiln. The basic idea is to fill a flower pot with a mixture of glasses, and heat it very hot so that the molten glass has a low enough viscosity to pour through the hole (or aperture) in the bottom of the pot.

For a 12″ round disk pot melt, you should use about 3.5 lbs of glass scraps. A smaller hole causes the glass to flow slower, and a larger hole will make it flow faster. Make sure you're taking the shape of your kiln shelf into account, as any dips or curves in your shelf will probably blend and alter the outcome further. Shop our kiln shelves.

It is often talked about as a great way to use leftover pieces of glass or as a way to recycle a failed project. This technique has been on my "to-try" list for a long time. The basic process involves suspending a clay pot with a hole, or multiple holes, in the bottom of it over a kiln shelf.

Great way to use scrap glass. Line your stainless steel forms with 1/8" fiber paper. Where the ends meet put a small piece of scrap thinfire behind the seam as insurance. Put the form on thinfire or a well kiln washed shelf. Be sure the 1/8" is pushed all the way to the shelf leaving no gaps.

Pot melts can be done in a few ways.one way is to support the pot over a heavily kiln washed shelf with stilts. I use regular kiln stilts with a slice of kiln shelf across them. (An old broken kiln shelf will slice easily with a wet tile saw.) Fill the pot with scrap glass and fire up the kiln. ( Firing schedules later!)
